Welcome!
Thank you for visiting the website of the Laboratory of Bioprocesses and Biotechnology, coordinated by Prof. Ninoska Bojorge at the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at Universidade Federal Fluminense. We hope you will take the time to explore this site and learn about the research questions we are currently addressing. Please email us with any questions or comments about anything you read.

Overview

The Laboratory of Bioprocesses and Biotechnology (BIOPRO) is dedicated to the development and application (Experimental and by Modeling & Simulation) of science and technology in the broad area of biotechnology, bioengineering and bioprocess engineering. That includes transdisciplinarity between cellular and molecular biology, enzymes and engineered biotransformation, bioseparation and bioprocess engineering, food and environmental biotechnology, biofuels, biomaterials engineering, nanobiotechnology and biosensors, undergraduate and graduate research in Chemical Engineering (PPGEQ) .

Focus

Biotechnology thrives at the interface of engineering and molecular life sciences. This is its characteristic and reason for being. The biological systems we are dealing with are complex, and designing them and the processes in which they play a key role are some of the crucial tasks of this century’s chemical, energy and healthcare industries. BIOPRO wants to contribute decisive research to this mission. To achieve this goal, various disciplines must be integrated and optimized with the following common goals for both biological systems:

  • Valuation of residual biomass integrating the concept of biorefinery;
  • Optimization of the expression system at the cellular level;
  • Standardized methodologies to establish optimal operational strategies for the production of bioproducts of industrial interest;
  • Mathematical modeling of bioprocesses,
    Integrated downstream processes for efficient product recovery and purification;
  • Scale-up and scale-down of bioprocesses,
    Production and application of enzymes (Cellulases and Oxidative);
  • Production of biomaterials (Nanocellulose);
  • Biosensors and Automatic Process Control;

The students and researchers who carry out the work use biotechnology to directly manipulate cells and develop principles for applying biotechnology on an industrial scale. The research addresses unit operations spanning bioreactors, membrane separation systems, high-temperature reactions and enzymatic transformations, and other thermochemical biocatalytic processes. The underlying approach is to study molecular phenomena and then develop mechanistic mathematical models that enable or anticipate the performance of biocatalytic transformations, bioseparations and other reactions under various laboratory-scale conditions. Once new concepts are proven and understood, engineering design can build prototypes to test the technology in the pilot plant, field or industry. These key steps in transferring technology from the laboratory bench to large-scale industrial practice form part of all BIOPRO research activities.
